   Sansui's two-piece flagship, rated at 300 watts per channel. Seldom seen for sale and treated as a holy grail by Sansui collectors.

4. 4. Pioneer SX-1980

   1978–1980 · 270 W/ch

   The biggest Pioneer of the power-war era, rated at 270 watts per channel. Huge, heavy and theatrical, it remains a centerpiece for anyone collecting the giants.

5. 5. Marantz 2500

   1977–1980 · 250 W/ch

   Famous for its front-panel oscilloscope and free-spinning Gyro-Touch dial, the 2500 helped kick off the monster-receiver race with 250 watts per channel.
